I read this book, borrowed from the library, in April 2006. This year I received a copy through my Paperbackswap account. I decided to reread it slowly. I placed it in our bathroom and read it only a few minutes a day.
I was curious to know if I would enjoy it as much as I previously had. Michael Rips was not particularly close to his father. After his father died Michael happened upon a photo of a naked black woman in his father's things. He decided he hadn't known his father well enough. He decided he had to try to find out who the woman was and how his father had been involved in her life.
That part of the story is a somewhat touching one, really. The thing is that Michael is a story-teller, and a pretty good rambler. The first time I read the book I kind of enjoyed that I guess. This time through I just wasn't nearly as enamored. I think I've matured a lot in my reading style over the years. We all surely hope to do that.
I love memoirs and this title certainly falls into that genre, at least in part. I generally enjoy a bit of self-discovery too but Rips is a bit holier-than-thou in the way he draws analogies. I enjoy a bit of fun in a story too. I think Rips goes too far in both directions though. He can't find a happy medium. In the earliest parts of the book he includes one story that is simply there just for its shock value, nothing more. I didn't like that. Most readers, I think, wouldn't.
I was glad to be reminded the identity of the naked lady but I'm not so thrilled that I reread this book. Today, I wouldn't recommend it to most people and can only give it about 2 - 2.5 stars.
Years ago I asked a good friend how she found time to read. She replied "Ang, you find time for the things you love." It stuck with me.

The Invention of Everything Else by Samantha Hunt
I once asked my husband who his favorite inventor was. He began telling me some incredible things about Nicola Tesla that I didn't know. I decided to see what I could learn about him on my own.
I began with this juvenile biography selection:

It was fascinating! Tesla must have been an incredible person. I came away from this book thinking he was just a scream. What an inventive spirit. He was world's ahead of his time. If he were suddenly brought back to life I can't imagine what he'd come up with, given today's advances in technology.
Later, my brother, Duffy, and I came across this adult selection while I was living in England:

This is a fictional story about Nicola Tesla. This book fictionalized a story around him, involving a bit of time-travel even. I really enjoyed the middle of the book...the end was a little disapointing but not enough for me not to rate this book favorably. I felt the author could have developed the climax and ending a bit more but she did a wonderful job of creating a story around this amazing man.

If You Ask Me...And Of Course You Won't by Betty White
I love reading memoirs and autobiographies and biographies.
I think I prefer autobiographies because I think there is a greater chance you will pick up on the feelings of the person the book is about.
I didn't learn a lot about Betty White from her book... The book seemed like a long chat with a friendly person more than anything. It progressed easily and without compulsion other than her obvious compulsion regarding animals. She loves animals.

I also learned that she never had children but does have step-children who she enjoys very much. She deeply loved her husband who has passed away.
(I mostly post only books that I would give four or five star ratings to but as memoirs go this will suit some and not others and that's okay. For me it was about a 3.5 out of 5*. I didn't love it, but I also didn't despise it. If you love and fight for animal rights this book will have greater appeal for you.)

What genres do you read?
I think most people find they prefer certain reading genres.
Mine have changed over time. When I first began to read for pleasure (high school, but few books) I preferred fiction. As an adult, once I really began to read more, I found I enjoyed mostly non fiction selections. Many of those books were related to my Christianity or marriage/family. Now that I read even more, I have found that I enjoy both fiction and non fiction.
These days I can really appreciate the creativity required to produce a riveting and well written fictional story. I think that preference has been influenced by my homeschooling our kids. Together we have truly enjoyed some wonderful books! My avoidance of books as a pre-adolescent means I have a lot of uncovered ground in juvenile fiction!
In regard to fiction I've branched into some areas I previously hadn't ventured. Around the time we moved to England I found Jasper Fforde's books and really fell for them; they are so smart but very funny.
I enjoy biographies, often those written about film or tv stars of the 1940s-1960s.
I really like to read memoirs. A true story is sometimes the best!
I occasionally like a mystery.
I enjoy well written juvenile fiction.
I am learning that I have a real affinity for classic British literature too!
